Caring for your jewellery

Our jewellery is designed to be worn, loved and enjoyed. With a little care, you can help keep your favourite pieces looking beautiful for longer.

Our collections are made from sterling silver, gold-plated sterling silver and gold-plated brass. Each material needs slightly different care, but the golden rule is simple: keep your jewellery away from water, chemicals, perfumes and lotions wherever possible.

How to care for gold-plated jewellery

Gold-plated jewellery has a layer of gold applied over another metal. Over time, regular wear can naturally cause this layer to become thinner, particularly on areas that experience friction.

To help your gold-plated jewellery stay bright and beautiful for as long as possible:

  • Remove your jewellery before showering or bathing. Water, soap and shampoo can contribute to wear and dull the finish.

  • Take it off before swimming. Chlorine and salt water can affect both the plating and the metal underneath.

  • Remove jewellery before sleeping. Friction against bedding and your skin can gradually wear down the plating.

  • Apply perfume, moisturiser, sunscreen and other beauty products before putting on your jewellery. Allow products to dry fully before wearing your pieces.

  • Avoid exposing your jewellery to household chemicals, cleaning products and hand sanitiser where possible.

  • Put jewellery on last when getting dressed and take it off first when getting undressed. This helps reduce contact with clothing, cosmetics and other products.

  • Store pieces separately to prevent them from rubbing or scratching against each other.

How to clean your jewellery

The safest way to clean most of our pieces is to gently wipe them with a soft, clean and dry jewellery cloth after wearing.

For gold-plated jewellery, avoid abrasive polishing cloths, harsh jewellery cleaners, chemical dips and vigorous rubbing. These can wear away the gold plating.

If your piece needs more than a gentle wipe, use a soft cloth that is only very lightly dampened, then dry the jewellery thoroughly afterwards. Do not leave gold-plated pieces soaking in water.

Caring for sterling silver jewellery

Sterling silver can naturally tarnish or darken over time. This is a normal reaction between the silver and substances in the environment, including moisture and air, and does not necessarily mean that your jewellery is damaged.

Keep sterling silver pieces clean and dry, and store them somewhere cool and dry when you are not wearing them.

A suitable silver polishing cloth can be used on unplated sterling silver, but take extra care with any gold-plated areas, as polishing can remove the gold layer.

What causes jewellery to tarnish or discolour?

Jewellery can change appearance when exposed to moisture, chemicals and everyday products. Common causes include:

  • Perfume and fragrance

  • Body lotions and moisturisers

  • Sunscreen

  • Soap and shampoo

  • Chlorine and swimming pools

  • Salt water

  • Sweat and moisture

  • Household cleaning products

  • Hand sanitiser

  • Humidity and prolonged exposure to air

Individual skin chemistry can also affect how quickly jewellery changes colour or tarnishes. This is completely normal and can vary from person to person.

How should I store my jewellery?

Good storage can make a big difference to the life of your jewellery.

When you're not wearing your pieces, keep them in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Ideally, store individual pieces separately so that chains, charms and other components don't rub against each other.

Avoid leaving jewellery loose in a bathroom, where humidity from showers and baths can accelerate tarnishing.

For necklaces and chains, keeping them stored neatly can also help prevent tangling and unnecessary friction.

A simple rule to remember

Last on, first off.

Put your jewellery on after you've applied perfume, moisturiser and other beauty products, and take it off before showering, swimming, exercising or going to bed.

With a little extra care, your jewellery can stay looking beautiful and colourful for much longer.

Jewellery care at a glance

Please note: Gold plating is a surface finish and will naturally wear with regular use. How long the plating lasts depends on factors including frequency of wear, exposure to water and chemicals, friction, and individual skin chemistry. Proper care can help extend the life of the plating, but some change over time is a natural part of wearing gold-plated jewellery.
